I get the comparison that my dogs are much like having kids. And while I don't have kids, I will concede this is partially true. However, you don't take your kids everywhere and in fact you can send them away for good stretches of time. I do have to and I can't (and if I wished to, it would kind of defeat the purpose of having a guide dog). I think what it all comes down to is the "cool factor" -- on the surface it seems awesome to take your dog everywhere, but further evaluation isn't made beyond that.
