Owner trained
From Service Dog Training
The decision of how to obtain a service dog is very important. For many people, the best option is to contact an organization that provides already trained service dogs to handlers. The advantage of this approach is that the dog is fully trained when the handler receives it, and that the organization usually provides follow up training if any problems arise with the dog. The downside of this is that it can take many years to get a dog from a program, depending on which program and what tasks the dog needs to be able to accomplish. Also, it may be difficult for people with certain disabilities to find an organization that will train a dog for the specific tasks needed. For these people there are two options. One is to hire a private trainer to select and train a dog to the specific tasks needed. The other is for the handler to select and train a dog, either by themselves or with the assistance of a private trainer or training program.
Here I have compiled articles on training for certain tasks, considerations for dog selection and other information on the process of training your own service dog. I have included sections of Kain's training journal for any that are interested.
